In June I leave for Papua New Guinea to tackle the Kokoda Track. Before I depart, I wanted to share my reasons for taking on this challenge. As an elected representative I am asked to speak at many events and functions – but one of my busiest days is ANZAC Day. As a Gen Xer I readily admit it is hard for me to fully appreciate the sacrifice and courage of the men and women who served our nation so completely and willingly. My grandfathers were amongst these courageous individuals – one of them serving in New Guinea during WWII. I go to gain a better understanding of what my forebears did, and why they did it. I go to form a greater appreciation of their service. I go to say “thank you”!
