August 2010 – Safety at the Elimbah State School crossing has recently been a major focus for the Elimbah community. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP has been lobbying the State Government for funding to pay for a permanent crossing supervisor to ensure ongoing safety.
“Following a recent accident in which a young student was hit by a car, I am pleased to report that Cr Adrian Raedel and the Moreton Bay Regional Council have announced funding for the crossing relocation.” Mr Powell said.
“The Council saw this funding as a priority for the area. Nobody wants to see the lives of our young children being put at risk every day.” Cr Raedel commented.
“The current crossing will only move ten metres to the north but this relocation will have a huge impact on the safety for people crossing Beerburrum Road.”
Local resident, mum and P & C President, Sharon Webb, knows only too well how dangerous this area is for the children.
“Moving the crossing to the middle of the block is great and I thank Cr Raedel for his efforts but in the long term what we really need is funding for a crossing supervisor.” Ms Webb said.
“This really is only half a step in the right direction. We now need the State Government to come to the party with funding to ensure the safety of people crossing this road is maintained to the highest standard possible.
Mr Powell has been in negotiations with the State Government to allocate funds to employ a permanent crossing supervisor in an effort to make this crossing safer for parents and students.
“I am fully committed to getting this funding and will continue to lobby the Government to achieve an even better outcome for the people of Elimbah.” Mr Powell concluded.
