POWELL MEDIA RELEASE – Glass House Mountains National Landscape campaign gains momentum (22 November 2010)

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, and the local Glass House community have gained significant support for the inclusion of the iconic Glass House Mountains on the National Landscapes list.

“The National Landscapes program aims to celebrate and promote unique and iconic Australian landscapes to international travellers, yet there are only fifteen spaces in the program and only three positions remain available,” Mr Powell said.

Mr Powell recently invited a delegation of Sunshine Coast stakeholders to Parliament House to meet with the Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading.  The group included: Cr Anna Grosskreutz, Division 1 Sunshine Coast Regional Council; Cr Debbie Blumel, Regional Development Australia (RDA) Sunshine Coast; Ms Natalie Hodgskin, Australia Zoo; and, Mr John Sereni, Sunshine Coast Destination.

“I’m very passionate about this project and in order to move the application forward it was paramount that we meet with the Minister to gauge his support for the Glass House Mountains’ inclusion on this prestigious list,” Mr Powell continued.

“The meeting provided us the opportunity to demonstrate how the Glass House Mountains stand above the remaining icons in contention and how inclusion on this list will have enormous benefits to the surrounding communities and the Sunshine Coast as a whole.

“The Minister supports our efforts and has encouraged the group to continue to pursue the program further.  The Minister has also committed to speaking with Tourism Queensland in an effort to see this project come together.

Mr Powell welcomed the ongoing support of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, RDA – Sunshine Coast and the Australia Zoo.

“As Chair of Regional Development Australia, RDA, Sunshine Coast, I fully extend my support for this tremendous initiative,” Cr Debbie Blumel stated.

“It exemplifies the work of RDA in bringing together all levels of government – local, state and federal – businesses and the community to develop and strengthen the Sunshine Coast.  And it ticks all the boxes with positive and sustainable economic, social and environmental outcomes for the region.”

“As the long standing local Councillor for the Glass House Country, and as someone passionate about protecting and promoting the region, I too want to see this come to fruition, ” Cr Anna Grosskreutz added.

“The Glass House Mountains inclusion in the National Landscapes list would be of great benefit to the region and will certainly encourage tourism development and ensure further funding to protect our local environment,” Mr Powell concluded.
