LNP Shadow Minister for Environment, Andrew Powell MP will today join Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey MP at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to see first hand the issues facing the iconic wildlife park.

“Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the new Wildlife Hospital are suffering from decades of Labor Government neglect,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Despite exploiting the Sanctuary for cute photo opportunities when it suits them, the Premier and the Environment Minister have refused to commit any funding to ensure the future of this iconic place.

“Not only is it important to the southern Gold Coast community, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is an international tourist attraction that offers a unique experience to be enjoyed by young and old.

The Shadow Minister for Environment, Andrew Powell, said the Bligh Government’s environmental credentials were already on shaky ground, and the continued neglect of Currumbin Sanctuary was typical of their ignorance.

“The Bligh Labor Government has an abysmal track record when its comes to environmental management,” Mr Powell said.

“To neglect this facility and ignore the important work of the Sanctuary and the Wildlife Hospital proves Labor’s commitment to conservation and environmental protection is a farce,” he said.

“This situation has reached breaking point. If government funding is not secured urgently, the Sanctuary and its state-of-the-art Wildlife Hospital will be at risk,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Last week I wrote to the Premier and the Minister for Environment and Resource Management seeking financial assistance for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in this year’s budget.

“I have continually called on this Bligh Labor Government to acknowledge the Currumbin Sanctuary’s commitment to environmental protection and provide funding to ensure it can be maintained for future generations to enjoy.
