Parliamentary News – May 2011

The most recent sitting of Parliament was held in Mackay as part of the regional parliamentary circuit.  So much work goes into getting this off the ground but I personally really see the value in taking Parliament to our regional areas.  It was great to see school kids, who may not otherwise get the chance to see how Parliament works, have the opportunity to see first hand what it is all about.  I also had the chance to make a few off site visits to local canegrowers whilst in Mackay and I rounded off the trip with a visit to the Burdekin electorate where local member Rosemary Menkens introduced me to local farmers and irrigators.

Up next is the Budget sitting, starting on Tuesday 14 June.  It will surely be a few interesting weeks ahead as we assess where and how the money has been allocated. Of most interest to us will be if there’s any investment in the Coast Rail Duplication, the Maleny-Kenilworth Road, D’Aguilar Highway and Steve Irwin Way upgrades.  I’m also keen to see more investment in our local sporting facilities.  Whether we are successful remains to be seen.
