Independent review for Fraser Island Dingo management strategy

IF elected an LNP government will commission an immediate independent scientific peer review of the Fraser Island Dingo Management Strategy.

Announcing the review in Hervey Bay today, Shadow Minister for the Environment Andrew Powell said the LNP was committed to fixing Labor’s failed management of dingoes on Fraser Island.

“The LNP will ensure the Fraser Island Dingo’s future is guaranteed while ensuring ongoing tourism in this spectacular World Heritage Area,” Mr Powell said.

Mr Powell said the LNP recognised the Fraser Island Dingo was an integral part of the distinctive ecology that made Fraser Island unique.

“The Fraser Island Dingo is believed to be the purest strain of dingo remaining in Australia.

“Dingoes were once common on Fraser Island, but concerned locals report rapidly decreasing numbers.

“The interaction between visitors and dingoes on Fraser has been a matter of great contention. We need an open and transparent scientific debate to drive our management of this iconic species into the future.

LNP Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen, a long-time advocate for better management, said Labor had failed to protect tourists and failed to preserve dingoes.

“The current situation is not going away and Labor’s inaction to resolve it is unacceptable.

“I warmly welcome today’s announcement and look forward to the independent peer review of the Dingo Management Strategy.

“It’s what’s needed, and the LNP will use the review to properly develop a science-based approach to ensuring the sustainability of the dingo population and its ongoing interaction with tourists who visit this spectacular World Heritage Area.”

Mr Sorensen said the LNP was committed to a healthy and sustainable wild population of dingoes on Fraser while ensuring the island fulfils its potential as a sustainable tourism destination in this spectacular World Heritage Area.

“The LNP will plan and deliver a sustainable future for Fraser Island and its dingoes.”
