Powell Media Release – Auditor shoots holes in Labor’s environmental department (9 November 2011)

A new report has shredded Labor’s environment credentials revealing that the Environment and Resource Department’s poor management was responsible for its ineffectiveness in administering and enforcing legislation.

Shadow Minister for the Environment Andrew Powell said after almost two decades of Labor, there was still no proper rigour and reporting in the management of waste inQueensland

“Labor’s waste tax is not only going to destroy jobs, particularly when the huge department charged with supervising the controversial new laws have failed to get the basic rights, but it will not manage waste more effectively” Mr Powell said.

The Auditor-General found top heavy DERM was more focused on outputs then outcomes when it came to mitigating risks to the environment.

“RegionalQueenslandwas subjected to inconsistent monitoring and compliance from the department, and there was appalling and limited oversight to assist regions plan effectively.

“DERM’s dubious record of reporting to Parliament also failed to allow a proper assessment of its performance.

“This government directs DERM to tick boxes for green politics, rather than to achieve green outcomes.

“This is shown by its failure to have a management plan in place for any national parks inCape York.

“A CanDo LNP Government will work with affected stakeholders to achieve green outcomes.

“It has committed to a bio-region management plan to protect iconic places and national parks and will also deploy an extra 30 indigenous rangers to ensure practical, on the ground environmental management.”

Mr Powell said the LNP will repeal Labor’s job destroying waste tax, and getQueensland’s public service back on track.

“We can’t risk the environment for the sake of Labor’s greens preference deals.

“We can’t afford Labor again. Not again, not this time.”
