Andrew’s Great Walk (24 May 2013)

‘Andrew’s Great Walk’ held for the fourth year in a row was a huge success and the local Member was thrilled with the show of support from the community.

Flanked by both the Chaplains and School Principals from Maleny and Conondale State School, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, made the 34km trek with little complaint.

“The walk gets bigger every year and we had a record turnout of adults and kids who all made a huge effort to walk at least part of the journey from Little Yabba Creek into Maleny,” Mr Powell said.

“Today’s walk was held to coincide with Chaplaincy Week and provided the perfect opportunity for us to show our appreciation for the work of Chaplains in our school community.

“It was also ‘Walk to School Safely’ today so I was pleased to be joined by many school children from Conondale who made the trip from home into their school grounds.

In his four years as the local MP, Mr Powell has also been vocal in his commitment to delivering upgrades to Maleny-Kenilworth Road.  This road continues to be an electorate priority for Mr Powell and he was pleased to announce work to repair landslips will commence in the coming weeks.

“I told the community four years ago I would continue to fight to secure funding for these upgrades and I will not give up on that commitment.

“We know only too well that the former Government spent the money that was allocated to repair the road following the floods in 2010/2011, and it has been my fight ever since to ensure repairs are carried out.

“The Minister for Transport and Main Roads is well aware this road is on my hit list and I will continue to work with his Department well into the future so we can see these upgrades delivered.” Mr Powell concluded.

“I would like to publically thank all of the walkers, the community who donated and supported us along the way and also the Maleny IGA and Maleny Dairies for their food and drink donations.

“The walk will be on again next year so make sure you have your walking shoes ready!” Mr Powell commented.
