My name is Andrew Powell and I’m a sports fanatic!! Yep, you heard it here folks!
I’m proud to say I love most sports and I don’t mind whether I’m playing, watching or these days coaching my kids sporting teams when time permits. So it’s hardly surprising that I managed to sneak something sport related into my job as an MP and the idea for a charity cricket match was born.
This now annual event sees my ‘celebrity’ team battle it out for the ‘Golden Thong’ trophy against the ‘Magnificent Maleny Maulers’ led by their infamous Captain Simon Denver. The match has always raised money for a charity and the local community have continued to be very generous with their support and donations. Last year both teams decided that the match should become atribute to the late, great Maleny local, Dr Peter Oliver. Peter sadly lost his battle with lung cancer last year and in a further deep loss for the family, his wife Ann Oliver also recently lost her own battle with cancer. I’m pleased to say this annual event will continue to pay tribute to Peter and Ann for many years to come and all fundraising efforts will be directed to Lung Foundation Australia in their memory.
I am thrilled this year to announce several big names to the Andrew Powell Celebrity XI including the Deputy Premier, Hon Jeff Seeney MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hon Steve Dickson MP, Deb Frecklington MP, Member for Nanango Verity Barton MP, Member for Broadwater and Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP. . Locally, I am pleased to say Greg Williams, Charles Hodgson and Mick Glover are ready and rearing to go for another year. Also joining us again to represent the Lung Foundation Australia is Chris Emery.
The MDSRC (Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club) will again be doing much of the day’s organisation and will be working hard to ensure we have some great snacks, drinks and BBQ treats for spectators to purchase on match day.
If you can help out in any way either with man power or donations (including if you would like to sponsor any sixes hit on the day) then please make contact with my office on 5435 2013 or Gail Denver from MDSRC on -0438 779 601.
