Powell Media Release – Local Heroes Grants a favourite for Glass House MP

3 July 2017

Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House, says one of his favourite parts of the job being a State MP is being able to provide a bit of a helping hand to community groups or individuals. Since January 2016, Andrew has been providing Local Heroes Grants to community groups to assist with funding for projects, and to individuals pursuing sporting or academic ventures.

“It’s often difficult for individuals to cover the costs of pursuing sporting or academic opportunities and similarly community groups find it difficult to cover all the costs involved in promoting their groups or maintaining their facilities,” Andrew said.

Round three of the Local Heroes Grants for 2017 closed on the 12th of June and Andrew said the competition was as tough as ever deciding on who should receive the four $250 grants this round.

“There are so many deserving nominations put forward each round and it’s always hard to choose who the beneficiaries should be but once again all of the recipients in this round are very worthy,” Andrew said.

Winners for round three were:

  • Beerburrum State School to assist with costs towards plaques for their upcoming Centenary Celebrations
  • Woodford Neighbourhood Centre to purchase materials for workshops
  • Palmwoods Warriors Football Club to assist in running a charity game to raise money for a local Cancer Foundation
  • Nathan Dodd who is travelling with the Australian Intellectual Disability Cricket Team to the Mini World Cup in England as Senior Assistant Coach

“The next round closes on the 14th of August and I encourage anyone who fits the criteria for a Local Heroes Grant to apply through my website at www.andrewpowell.com.au,” Andrew concluded.

Closing dates for other rounds in 2017 are as follows:

Round 4 – Monday 14 August

Round 5 – Monday 9 October

Round 6 – Monday 11 December
