Powell Media Release – Petition launched for flashing lights in Peachester (21 August 2015)

As part of his commitment to fight for the needs of the Glass House community, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has lent his support to a petition demanding flashing school warning lights for Peachester State School.

“The former LNP Government had a firm commitment to roll out flashing lights across Queensland as we were acutely aware of how important they are to maintaining safety in school zones.  Over the course of the last three years we installed flashing lights at Beerburrum, Chevallum, Woodford, Wamuran and Elimbah state schools.

“These lights are particularly important for an area like Peachester that has a lot of ‘just passing through’ tourist traffic.  It is these motorists that are not aware of the school zone and therefore may not be as vigilant in slowing down,” Mr Powell said.

Mr Powell is working with the Peachester P & C to gather signatures for a petition that will show the Government how much community support exists to see these lights delivered.

“Flashing lights act as a reminder to drivers that they need to be on alert.  We know children are by nature unpredictable and may not be concentrating when they approach the streets or roads next to school areas,” he said.

“As the father of five young children, I am passionate about the safety of our young people and if we can make the wider community realise how important this sort of precaution is, we will be ensuring our school zones are safer for everybody.”

Mr Powell will have a stall set up at the Peachester Family Fun Day on September 5 so come along and add your name to the petition.  You can also support the online petition by visiting the Parliament website – www.parliament.qld.gov.au and click on Get Involved.
