It's all Coming up Schools in Andrew Powell's Latest Round of Local Heroes Grants!

Tuesday, 16 July 2024

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has recently announced the chosen winners for round two of his 2024 Local Heroes Grants, and the list appears to be dominated by schools and students this time around.

“It’s a well-known fact that I love supporting our local schools in any way I can. So to see so many of them applying for my Local Heroes Grants, I was stoked!” said Mr Powell.

“It’s also part of the reason I picked six winners, as opposed to the usual four. I can’t pick and choose when it comes to schools.”

Mount Mee State School

Eight bright young students from Mount Mee State School are currently taking part in a three-session leadership course from VIRB – Virtues Improving Relational Behaviours. The total cost per student was $69 and the school was unable to absorb the entire cost for each student alone, so I was pleased to pitch in half with their $250 grant.

Beerburrum State School

Beerburrum State School are seeking to expand their technology and robotics programs and resources. This year’s brand new P&C are working hard to fundraise to assist the school in purchasing equipment and devices to give their kids the technology to learn.

Glasshouse Mountains State School

Chappy Jess applied for a grant on behalf of Glasshouse Mountains State School to assist with the costs of running their breakfast club which feeds students before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are also looking to run more food programs, expand their menu and purchase a new BBQ and commercial toaster.

Sculpture on the Edge

Sculpture on the Edge is an annual sculpture showcase coordinated by Arts Connect Inc and held in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Now in its fifteenth year, the event is growing in popularity and therefore costing the hosts more and more to organise and run smoothly. They rely on donations to fund the event so their Local Heroes Grant was very welcome.

Warriors Netball Club

The Warriors team wanted to give back to their hard-working umpires by providing them with paid further learning and new visors to wear on the courts.

Ashton Van Straten

Glasshouse Christian College student Ashton Van Straten has big plans to be a part of the 2028 Olympics, representing Team Australia in Volleyball. He has represented QLD for two consecutive years in indoor volleyball, bringing home a silver medal in 2022 and a gold in 2023.

Being one of five children and with the cost of living continually rising, the cost of high level competitions can be one cost too many. Ashton’s grant will go towards travel, accommodation and competing costs.
