Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has welcomed a revised safety improvement plan for the corner of Mount Mee Road and Lewington Road that will improve road safety while protecting important environmental habitat.
The intersection has a concerning crash history, including a fatal motorcycle accident in December 2023 and several injury crashes over the past decade.
“I have been calling for upgrades to Mt Mee Road for more than a decade, so it’s important we continue to move forward with safety improvements,” Mr Powell said.
Earlier plans for the project included the removal of two large eucalyptus trees as part of embankment works. While the community supported road safety improvements, residents raised concerns about the loss of the trees and the impact on local wildlife habitat.
After meeting with more than 20 concerned residents in October 2025, Mr Powell wrote to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads outlining the community’s concerns and requesting the proposal be reconsidered.
“When I met with residents, it was clear they supported making this road safer, but they were deeply concerned about the removal of these two large eucalyptus trees,” he said.
“I heard those concerns firsthand and wrote to Minister Mickelberg to ensure the community’s views were considered.”
“I know this has been a sensitive matter for our Mount Mee community, so I’m pleased we’ve been able to reach an outcome that achieves a better balance.”
Following further technical and environmental investigations, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has refined the project scope. The revised package of works will include high-impact regulatory speed signage and enhanced curve alignment markers to improve driver awareness. Minor vegetation clearing will be undertaken to improve sight lines, but no mature trees will be removed.
“This alternative scope of works will still deliver important safety improvements while maintaining the environmental values that are important to our community,” Mr Powell said.
TMR will also work with the Queensland Police Service to explore increased enforcement opportunities to support compliance with existing speed limits.
This revised approach achieves a careful balance – strengthening road safety while protecting ecologically significant habitat valued by the community and local wildlife.
The approach also complements the Crisafulli Government’s $1 million commitment to plan and prioritise future upgrades on Mount Mee Road through Ocean View.
