Applications now Open – 2026 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP is encouraging local Year 10, 11 and 12 students to apply for the 2026 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary, with applications now officially open.

Established in 2019, the annual bursary honours the life and legacy of the late Joyce Newton OAM, a respected educator, community advocate, and passionate contributor to civic life in Maleny and the broader hinterland region.

Mr Powell said the bursary was created to recognise Joyce’s extraordinary contribution to the community while supporting the next generation of local leaders as they pursue further education and training after school.

“Joyce Newton dedicated her life to education, community service and making a positive difference in the lives of others,” Mr Powell said.

“This bursary honours her remarkable legacy by encouraging young people to pursue their goals and continue her spirit of service, leadership and community involvement.”

“Each year I am inspired by the calibre of applicants and the achievements of young people across the Glass House electorate. I encourage all eligible students to consider applying.”

For the first time this year, the bursary has been expanded to include a second award stream recognising students pursuing a trade career pathway, alongside the existing academic pathway award.

“The introduction of the Trade Pathway Award reflects the many different pathways young people can take to build successful and rewarding careers,” Mr Powell said.

“We want to support students whether they are heading to university, vocational training or an apprenticeship, and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.”

The bursary is open to Year 10, 11 and 12 students who reside in the electorate of Glass House and are planning to undertake further study, training or an apprenticeship following their high school graduation.

Students are invited to submit:

  • Their name, address, contact details and school attended;
  • Details of their achievements at school, including academic, sporting, community and extracurricular activities;
  • Information about the study they wish to undertake following school and where it will be undertaken;
  • Why they wish to pursue that field of study;
  • How the bursary would assist them in achieving their educational goals; and
  • A brief outline of Joyce Newton’s contribution to her community.

The successful Academic Pathway applicant will receive:

  • A $1,000 gift voucher from Concept IT in Maleny;
  • Formal recognition of their achievement in the Queensland Parliament; and
  • Dinner for the winner and their family at Queensland Parliament.

The successful Trade Pathway applicant will receive:

  • A $700 gift voucher from Mitre 10 in Maleny;
  • Formal recognition of their achievement in the Queensland Parliament
  • Dinner for the winner and their family at Queensland Parliament.
